  • PatientRSNA Image Share is a network created to enable radiologists to share medical images with patients using personal health record (PHR) accounts. RSNA Image Share is a pilot project, funded by the National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and administered by RSNA. It is used by patients at medical centers across the US.


    Using CDs to give patients copies of the medical images and reports can be a cumbersome and frustrating process for radiology staff and patients alike. RSNA Image Share lets you use secure Internet technology to give your patients control over their records. They manage their information in secure PHR accounts and decide who to share them with.

    RSNA Image Share gives you control over your medical images and radiology reports. It lets you build a secure online personal medical history and securely share your information with care providers. Tell your radiologists about the RSNA Image Share network and encourage them to get connected.

    The RSNA Image Share network project provides the tools to link radiology systems (PACS and RIS) at any site to the network. A device called the Edge Server gathers images and reports and places them in secure digital package. It gives patients a unique security key they use to retrieve this information into their PHR accounts.     RSNA Image Share Validation Program

    RSNA, in collaboration with The Sequoia Project, is proud to introduce the Image Share Validation Program, a conformity assessment program that will set the standard for consistency in the marketplace. The Image Share Validation Program will test the compliance of vendors’ systems using quality standards determined most effective for accurate and efficient exchange of medical images including those used in the RSNA Image Share Network Registration will begin in January 2016 and initial testing will take place starting in March 2016.

    Who Should Participate?

    • Vendors of imaging systems such as Reporting Systems, RIS and PACS that wish to enable those systems to connect to networks for sharing images with providers and patients
    • Vendors of health information exchange systems that wish to enhance their systems to exchange medical images and reports 

    RSNA will collaborate with The Sequoia Project and the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR) at Washington University in St. Louis to conduct the testing. The Sequoia Project is responsible for several national interoperability initiatives, including the eHealth Exchange, a health data sharing network connecting over 100 million patients. MIR brings a wealth of hands-on experience in imaging informatics and standards activities, include oversight of IHE Connectathon testing.
